A word from the Ambassador | Weather cools...official visits hot up!

It is that wonderful time of the year where the temperatures have dropped and everyone starts to head outdoors to enjoy life in the UAE. This change of weather does, however, also mean life in general starts to get (very) busy, as I am sure you all are finding in your own workplaces.

At the Embassy we know Summer is definitely over because the official visits are now in full force. As I have mentioned previously in this newsletter and in various other forums, the Embassy and Austrade continue to work hard to identify new and renewed ways to further strengthen Australia’s bilateral trade and investment relationship with the UAE.

We were fortunate to recently welcome the Australian Treasurer, the Hon Joe Hockey MP, to Dubai briefly this month to discuss potential measures to further this part of the relationship with HE Obaid Al Tayer, Minister of State for Financial Affairs.

In the last two months we have also hosted a number of other official visitors from Australia – a further testament to the significance of Australia’s relationship with the UAE. Visitors have included the Hon Sir General Peter Cosgrove, Governor General; Senator the Hon David Johnston, Minister of Defence; the Hon Michael Keenan, Minister of Justice – accompanied by the Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, Andrew Colvin APM OAM; the Brisbane Lord Mayor, Rt Hon Councillor Graham Quirk and his accompanying business delegation; and 25 delegates who participated in the largest Australian Rail delegation to ever visit the region. Mr Daniel Sloper, Australia’s G20 Special Representative also recently visited the UAE as part of his outreach program, in advance of Australia’s hosting of the G20 Leaders’ Summit from 15-16 November in Brisbane, Queensland.

The Summit will be the most significant diplomatic event Australia has ever hosted with at least 25 world leaders representing G20 members and six guest nations, plus the heads of seven international organisations including the UN, IMF, World Bank and the World Trade Organization. The Summit will not only be an opportunity for Australia to demonstrate our ability to host large high-level international events, but will also serve as a platform for addressing the pressing economic policy issues facing the international community. For those who are interested, further information may be found at

The month of October has also been an extremely busy one for Australian sport here in the UAE, we would like to thank all of you who came out to support the Socceroos in their friendly against the UAE and who attended the AusBG-ABCD Business Luncheon with the Socceroos. It was encouraging to see such a strong level of interest, both at a community and business level, in advance of the Asian Football Cup (AFC) which will take place in various capital cities across Australia in January 2015. We also look forward to welcoming the UAE National Football team to the Gold Coast in December for their pre-AFC training.

As you would have seen in the media, the Australian cricket team have also been touring the UAE while they battle it out against Pakistan. They have done extremely well in the ODI’s but not so well in the previous test match which has just finished. The last test which is being played at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi will run 30 October – 3 November.

No doubt Christmas will be upon us within a blink of an eye, so why not start planning to take advantage of one of the 133 direct flights between the UAE and Australia each week. I wish you all a good upcoming November and trust that it will be a busy and success one. I hope we all managed to back a winner in the Melbourne Cup!
