Austrade update | 2015 - the year of innovation

As we head into one of the busiest periods of the financial year, with our annual flagship event, Australia Unlimited MENA only a month away, highlighted below are some developments from the program and a recap of activities the past month.

Gulfood 2015 took place from 8-12 February 2015. Australia has been a significant participant since its inception and this year over 150 Australian companies attended, including large delegations from Victoria, Food SA and the Gold Coast City Council.

Austrade led a series of business events including a market briefing for over 50 new-to-market Australian exporters, highlighting Dubai as the food logistics hub for the Middle East and beyond. Austrade regional representatives from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait attended Gulfood along with their buyer groups. As our key function, the team organised a buyer networking reception, in collaboration with every mainland Australian state, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and Qantas. The reception introduced Australian premium food suppliers to major customers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, India, Thailand and Jordan.

Ahead of International Women's Day, on 22 February, the Australian Embassy and Austrade hosted former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, at the Consulate General in Dubai for a reception celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women globally. Over 90 people attended the reception.

Austrade participated at the largest aquaculture event in the region, AQUA Middle East taking place from the 16-18 March 2015. Strong interest was received from Australian companies in areas of Coastal and Marine resource management, Aquaculture systems (RAS) and Aquaculture consultancy. Austrade organized speaking opportunities at the show conference, roundtable discussions with the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water and a site visit to the state-of-the-art Sheikh Khalifa hatchery. Companies who exhibited under the Australian pavilion were - BMT Oceanica, Smart Aqua, and RADAQUA.

UAE announced 2015 as the year of innovation perfectly aligning with the Australia Unlimited MENA theme, which also centres on Innovation, specifically around priority sectors for the region – Education, and Sustainable Urban Development. We are expecting key delegations from Australia from across these industries to be part of the event. We will be shortly launching the seminar registration site and sending you information through the ABCD portal.

Coinciding with the AU MENA event in April, leading supermarket chain, Choitram will be running an Australian retail food promotion in select stores in Dubai and Abu Dhabi for two weeks starting 12 April 2015.

In conjunction with MLA we are also planning a culinary cook-off in April where teams from 5 culinary schools in the UAE will be challenged to create dishes from a ‘mystery box of ingredients.’

Joining our esteemed line up of sponsors, Macquarie Capital and University of Wollongong Dubai are now on board as Silver Sponsors and Box Hill Institute as Lanyard sponsors. AU MENA sponsors represent varied sectors ranging from government – Australian and Dubai (Victoria, Western Australia, Dubai land Department, DAFZA); airlines (Qantas); education (Navitas, Box Hill, UOWD); services – legal, financial and business (Corrs Chambers Westgarth, MacCap, Servcorp); and hospitality (One & Only Resorts).
