A word from the Ambassador | Welcome back after the summer holidays

The summer period was an unusually busy one at the Embassy. In June, we invited members of our UAE-Australia Alumni network to attend ABCD’s iftar, which was a great opportunity for alumni and the Australian business community in Dubai alike to establish new connections. Our Alumni network is growing with each event and is a key focus for the Embassy’s ongoing outreach.

We are looking to a combined Alumni-AusBG Abu Dhabi event in December. If anyone knows of any Emiratis who studied in Australia or at an Australian university in the UAE, please encourage them to contact us at

In August, the Governor-General visited the UAE on his way to and from the Battle of Lone Pine Centenary Commemorations and bilateral visit programs in Turkey and Iraq.  The Governor-General was able to reflect on 40 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and the UAE in meetings with HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.  A central feature of discussion in both meetings was the ongoing strategic outlook for the region, as well as obviously Australia’s strong and deepening relationship with the UAE.

Unfortunately, this new school year commenced with the tragic killing of at least 52 Emirati soldiers, as well as soldiers from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, in Yemen. In the days following, our Prime Minister and Foreign Minister called their UAE counterparts to offer their condolences.  Our thoughts are with the soldiers’ families and friends at this time of national mourning.

We have already started planning for Australia Unlimited MENA 2016, Austrade’s annual promotional campaign for the region. This will be the fourth year of this whole of government initiative, which promotes trade, investment and cultural ties between Australia and the MENA region. It will be held at the end of January in conjunction with Arab Health and the Embassy’s Australia Day celebrations.

On 2 September, Senior Trade Commissioner, Gerard Seeber, met with potential sponsors to discuss plans for the rollout of the 2016 program. On another note, I would like to draw your attention to the current Council for Australia-Arab Relations (CAAR) grant round, which will close on 5 October. CAAR is looking for projects that enhance Australia’s economic, cultural and social relations with the Arab world. For more information, visit
