Chairman's Message | End of year update

I wouldn’t be the first to say it, but I can’t believe it’s almost Christmas!

What a fantastic year 2018 has been for the ABCD.  As a snapshot we hosted 35 events, introduced 215 new members, we introduced a new Consul General, Ian Halliday, and look to working with him in the year ahead. We also welcomed two new team members to the ABCD operations and were honoured to host the Melbourne Cup for yet another year, made even more special as it was also a time to honour the Butlers as they bid farewell to their Dubai residency.

It would be amiss to say that 2018 didn’t have its challenges, the market was tough.  We farewelled a few long-time members but were privileged to welcome a lot of new ones just the same.  I would like to pay particular mention to GHD, Multiplex, Tahpi, CreativeZone and Affiniax Partners who have joined as SME/Large corporate members this year, your continuing support of the ABCD is welcomed.

But just as this year was tough, at many of our events there was a lot of optimism.  Playing a huge part of this optimism is the fantastic team at DFAT, Austrade and state trade offices.  Who, amongst all of their regular Embassy, Consulate and Trade & Investment work, are tirelessly putting together Australia’s pavilion for the Dubai Expo2020.  Without a doubt, from all that I have heard, it should easily be best in the show.

We were also privileged this year to welcome TLB Business Advisory Services, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and CPA Australia as sponsors to the ABCD.  TLB has been at the heart of the Australian community in Dubai for a number of years, and we have benefited greatly from their guidance and support with our accounts this year. The AICD held their second International Company Directors Course here in Dubai where they continued to set the benchmark for directorship and corporate governance internationally. We are delighted that they will be returning in November 2019, so watch this space for special discounts for ABCD Members. CPA Australia has also been a great partner, particularly in supporting the community with access to expertise in financial management. This has been gratefully received this year with the introduction of VAT as well as new growth industries emerging such as Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. With celebrating our new sponsors, I would also like to make a special mention to Emirates and their continuing support of the ABCD.

All of the events, initiatives, tickets, shows, newsletter’s, social media updates, emails, surveys come out from a dedicated team at the ABCD offices.  So, it would be amiss to not mention the gratitude the Board and I have to the tireless work of the ABCD operations team.  In a very big way, they keep the Australian community spirit alive for many of us living away from home.

As we head straight into 2019, a new year will bring fresh challenges, but it will also bring new opportunities.  With an AGM scheduled for Feb/March, the Board is working tirelessly to put together some new initiatives that will bring the Australian community together closer than it has ever been. There is a lot of good stuff coming, stay tuned.

Finally, I would like to wish you merry Christmas with your family, be it here or back home in Australia, and a happy New Year.
