Face to Face with... | Abby Bailey, Fedex Middle East

Please tell us a little about (your workplace/business)

FedEx provides customers and businesses worldwide with a broad portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and business services. FedEx invented the express transportation industry, and since then, has continued to connect people with possibilities around the world. FedEx Express is recognized here in the UAE and across the globe as among the world’s most admired and trusted employers.

What is your role at (your workplace/business)?

I am the Communications Manager for the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa (MEISA), and work with a team of 6 specialists on our internal and external communications activities, and the program of community engagement and volunteer activities across the region.

How long have you been working in the role and where were you working previously?

I first started with FedEx Express in 2003, but have held my current position, based here in the UAE for the last 2 years. My first role after leaving University was working in research in the Victorian Government, then as a policy advisor, and then as a consultant for Government Relations and Communications. My career with FedEx Express has taken me to Singapore, Brussels, and now to Dubai.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Without a doubt, it’s seeing the impact we make on people’s lives. Whether it’s delivering an urgent medical shipment, helping a small business owner tackle cross border e-commerce, or making sure the Christmas presents get to family and friends at home in time for Christmas morning (especially if like me, you leave this until the last minute), our global air and ground transportation network covers 99% of global GDP, which means that we connect people and possibilities around the world.

What is the most challenging and difficult aspect of your job?

With 45% of the world’s population and more than 80 countries and territories making up the MEISA region, I have a constant reminder that how we communicate with our team members in each country needs to recognize and be conscious of their local needs and influences.  Luckily, with more than 50 nationalities represented in the FedEx Express team here in the UAE, I always have someone to ask for advice!

What does a typical day at work look like?

While there are standard tasks or roles that come up on a regular basis, there is no such thing as a typical day at FedEx! In general however, any day can involve writing or reviewing materials for team members about a specific project or activity, working with or answering questions from the media about our operations, providing advice and counsel to our leadership team, to working with my colleagues from across the globe on a project or activity to support the business.

How do you like to spend your leisure time?

I’ve been learning photography for a while now, and Dubai offers excellent opportunities and sights to practice on. I also recently got a dog, so I have even more reason to get out and about and explore Dubai and beyond.

What do you think about living in Dubai?

Dubai is an amazing city. One of my biggest surprises here was the amount of open or green space that you can easily access in the city, or a short drive outside, and I loved the 30x30 fitness challenge – next year I’m challenging myself to not only do 30 minutes of exercise for 30 days, but to sample the range of classes and group activities offered across the city!
