A Message from Team Australia | Consul General Mr Ian Halliday

Dear Members,

Wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Firstly, I want to acknowledge the Australian community, the Emirates Red Crescent, Expo 2020 Dubai, and the UAE government for supporting the Australian Bushfire efforts back home. In true Australian spirit everyone came together to organize a number of fundraising events and activities across the UAE.

The Australian Government has already announced a range of measures as part of the National Bushfire Recovery Agency’s response to aid the recovery of bushfire ravaged communities, which includes: grants for small businesses affected by the devastation; promote tourism to the country; initiate a national clean-up to assist areas impacted by fire; provide mental health support services to firefighters, emergency personnel, individuals and communities impacted by the ongoing bushfire disaster, etc.

The Australian Government has also been working with states and territories and industry to provide relief to communities, reconnect power, restore communications and ensure essential supplies.

To Australia’s many friends and supporters throughout the world who are asking, ‘How can we help?’ we say: continue to buy Australian, visit Australia, study in Australia, and invest in Australia.

At the start of the year, we had 35 Australian companies participating at Arab Health, 30 companies at Mining Indaba in South Africa first week of February, 95 companies at Gulfood, and 20 education institutions end of February for the IDP roadshow – a good indication of Australia’s business interest in the region across varied sectors.

As most of you know 2020 is a big year for the UAE and also for Australia through our participation at Expo 2020 Dubai. The last world expo Australia participated in was in 2010 in Shanghai. UAE being a unique host destination with expected 25 million visitors, out of which 70% coming from overseas, makes it a truly global event.

During the expo, the Austrade-led business program in particular, will focus on profiling Australian capabilities in priority sectors - Food & Agribusiness; Education & Training; Resources & Energy; and Advanced Manufacturing, Defence & Space, around anchor international commercial exhibitions, which will be running concurrently to the Expo over a six month period.

Additionally, Austrade is exploring joint trade and investment prospects with key nation partners such as, UK, USA, New Zealand, Canada, UAE, China, Saudi Arabia, and Japan.

As part of the market outreach to support the business program, we are also providing expo briefings to Australian delegations participating/attending regional events such as Arab Health, Mining Indaba in South Africa, Gulfood, and IDP Education roadshow. For more information on the Austrade Expo program, email

Concurrent to the expo, G20 will be taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – 21-22 November 2020. We’ll expect a number of ministerial visits around that time, and an inflow of Australian delegations during the year who will be participating in the preliminary activities leading up to the main event. We will keep you posted on the various initiatives through regular updates, and look forward connecting with you at the next ABCD event.
