Austrade update | Major sporting and industry events

Hope you all had a good summer break.

The summer was mostly spent planning for the new financial year and growing our network of colleagues in the region. We welcomed our new Deputy Consul General and Trade Commissioner, Ms. Elodie Journet in July. Elodie will be leading the Urban Development initiative and the trade team in the Dubai post plus providing support on Consulate responsibilities. Elodie joined Austrade back in 2006 and has been responsible for ICT, Infrastructure, Resources and Energy as part of her responsibilities over this period.

Baris Satar joined us as the new Education Manager in Dubai. Prior to joining Austrade, Baris worked as the joint education team leader for the European region. Baris came to Austrade from a position at Macquarie University, Australia.

Lastly, Adel Ghaly commenced employment with Austrade in August as Business Development Manager, Kuwait. Adel has extensive work experience from Egypt, Canada and Kuwait in various sectors including waste management, FMCG retail, trading, construction and engineering.

Whilst we are thrilled to welcome our new colleagues, we are also bidding farewell to an important member of our team, Ms. Anna Lin, Trade Commissioner Dubai, who has played an instrumental role the past year in handling consular responsibilities, managing the regional education programs, and leading major project initiatives such as the MENA Connection Seminars 2013 and the Australia Unlimited MENA 2014. Anna will be moving to Guangzhou, China for another exciting role within Austrade.

In the coming months, we are busy gearing up for some major sporting and industry events.

The Australian cricket team will be in the UAE from 28 September – 5 November playing a series of T20, ODIs and test matches in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah. Additionally, the ICC Trophy Tour will be taking place from 7-14 October. For the most part the trophy will be displayed at Dubai Mall but will also make appearances at all the ODI matches and a possible event to highlight the ICC Cricket World Cup in Feb/March 2015 in Australia and New Zealand.

Not far behind, the Socceroos will be in UAE and Qatar in October where they will be playing friendly matches on 10 October in Abu Dhabi and on 14 October in Doha; followed by the AFC Trophy Tour in Qatar with the trophy being displayed at the Landmark Mall from 23-25 October, and at Mall of the Emirates in Dubai from 30 October – 1 November.

Innotrans, the largest rail event in the world, which is held every 2 years and the major focus for the Australian rail industry internationally, will be taking place from 23-26 September 2014 in Germany. Out of the 35 Australian rail organisations exhibiting at Innotrans, 15 are participating on a two day mission (16 -17 September 2014) to Abu Dhabi and Dubai organised by the Australasian Railway Association, Austrade, and the Industry Capability Network. The purpose of the visit is to share the Australian Rail experience with relevant authorities and get an update on the major rail projects in the UAE. Australia runs some of the heaviest and longest freight trains in the world in similar topography and climate to the GCC, and its light rail network in Melbourne is the largest in the world.

For the second year, the Austrade MENA team will be heading to Australia from 7-18 October to promote a better understanding of the GCC states and the changes occurring that are providing new opportunities for Australian firms. The 2014 Australia Unlimited MENA Seminar Program will comprise of business seminars, roundtables and networking events held in Perth, Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane to advise on trade opportunities in key priority sectors; and highlight the strategies and capabilities to support firms that both the Federal and State Governments can provide in developing business relationships in the region.
