Newsletter 12/2014

A word from the Ambassador | Trade, business and investment links

Dear ABCD Members,

I trust that you all enjoyed the UAE’s National Day celebrations earlier this month and that you are taking advantage of the cooler weather to kick off the festive season. From a business perspective, this time of year is also right in the middle of the busy season, with one delegation or conference after another and it won’t let up until probably May or June next year (remember, Ramadan will be starting in mid-June next year).

While 2014 is not quite over yet and I’ll save an assessment of it for the next newsletter, I will note that it has been a big year for Australia as host of the G20. Our chairmanship of the G20 culminated in the successful G20 Leaders Summit in Brisbane in November where Leaders agreed (amongst other things) on a comprehensive growth strategy for each G20 member, which, if fully implemented, will add an additional $2 trillion to the global economy by the end of 2018.

Australia’s focus on job creation, taxation reform and boosting investment in infrastructure led to concrete outcomes, such as a new Global Infrastructure Hub in Sydney to promote cooperation between governments and the private sector on infrastructure investment.

On a lighter note, recent visits to the UAE by the Socceroos and the Australian Cricket Team, as well as the touring of the AFC and ICC cups, have kicked off a fantastic season of sport. As most of you are aware, in January 2015, five cities in Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Brisbane) will play host to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Finals in which 16 nations, including the UAE, will play over 32 matches. To capitalise on this football (soccer) fest, Austrade have developed a Match Australia program to host visiting delegations interested in watching the football and also pursuing their business interests in Australia.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to mention that November saw us sadly bidding farewell to Lauren O’Neil, our Second Secretary at the Australian Embassy who sat on the committee of the Australian Business Group in Abu Dhabi. Her energy and expertise will be much missed and we wish her all the best with her new job in the private sector and her new home in Singapore.

This is also an opportune time for me to thank those of you in the business community with whom we at the Embassy have worked closely over the past year. Trade, business and investment links are the basis upon which the UAE-Australia bilateral relationship is built and you are the ones that make that possible.

Wishing you all the best in the holiday season.
