Austrade update | Lots to look forward to in 2015

The year has already begun on a busy note with high-level ministerial visits, with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister both visiting in January, Australia Day celebrations, industry events and preparations for the third Australia Unlimited MENA 2015 promotional campaign.

On 27 January, Austrade hosted a networking reception for leading Australian Healthcare companies participating at Arab Health 2015. The event was attended by Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon Julie Bishop MP who was on her way to the airport in Dubai after a busy program in Abu Dhabi. The Minister was very interested in meeting with the 35 Australian companies that participated in Arab Health and learning from them how they see business opportunities developing in the Gulf.

I was invited for the official opening of the popular Sydney headquartered pie franchise, Pie Face, which opened its second store in the UAE on Australia Day at the Dubai Marina Walk. Their first outlet was launched in November at the Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi with plans to expand to another 100 stores in the GCC region. Australian food and hospitality are making inroads into the UAE market and is core part of our promotional strategy for this year.

Next important event in the food area is Gulfood 2015. During this exhibition Austrade will be hosting a business breakfast briefing on 8 February and a buyer networking reception on 9 February. 57 Australian companies from the F&B sector will be exhibiting this year.

Coinciding with the finals of the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015, a 13 member delegation from the GCC attended a VIP investment roundtable hosted by the Minister for Trade and Investment, Hon Andrew Robb MP on 31 January in Sydney. The delegation then was lucky enough to watch the Socceroos win the Final.

Australia Unlimited MENA is just three months away and we have an impressive line of sponsors and a comprehensive seminar and trade mission program across four cities in the UAE, KSA, and Kuwait. The business component will focus on three priority sectors for the region – Agribusiness, Education, and Sustainable Urban Development. We will also be running various community engagement activities in the month of April with Australian restaurants and other retailers in the UAE, details of which will be released shortly. Our highly valued sponsors include Dubai Land Department who are on board as a Strategic Partner; Platinum Sponsors – Qantas, and Government of Victoria; Gold Sponsors – Navitas, Dubai Airport Freezone, and One & Only Resorts; Silver Sponsors – Dome Café; Networking Lunch Sponsor – Servcorp; Gala dinner sponsor – Western Australia Trade Office; and Networking Reception Sponsor – Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

Wishing you all a prosperous and healthy 2015!

Yours Sincerely,

Mr. Gerard Seeber
