Austrade update | Recent events and activities

I hope you had a good summer break and Eid holidays.

With the start of the new Australian Financial Year, we saw the largest Middle East Rail delegation to visit Australia. Led by Austrade Abu Dhabi, 30 delegates from major Rail Operators, Ministries of Interior, Transport, Finance, Customs and Immigration from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman, as well as the GCC Secretariat General - including His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Abdallah Al Thani from the Qatari ruling family – travelled to Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Mackay, the Gold Coast and Brisbane from 31 August-8 September 2015.

Through a focused and extensive program, the delegation got the opportunity to meet with over 50 Australian companies, demonstrating Australia’s expertise across the rail sector, from policy, simulation, training, technology, research and development, to construction, operations and maintenance, pit-to-port freight, intermodal capability and metro and light rail public transport.

Official visits to and from Australia are an invaluable platform to strengthen bilateral collaboration in priority sectors. In October, we will have three more visits: two by the UAE Health Ministry, Abu Dhabi and Dubai Health Authorities to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, and one by an Australian Aquaculture delegation to the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Both will serve to reinforce the important role Australia can play in the regional development of quality healthcare and sustainable fisheries.

The first of our two annual promotional platforms – MENA Connection Series – will also be taking place in Australia from 26 October-6 November 2015. Organised by Austrade in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT), the third MENA Connection Series - themed “The Gulf: Regional Hub, Global Opportunity” - will see regional Ambassadors and Senior Trade Commissioners engage with the Australian business community, State and Federal Governments, Peak Industry Bodies and Chambers through Business seminars, G2B and G2G meetings and targeted roundtables and seminars in 8 locations.

This year, the focus will be on highlighting market gaps and opportunities for Australia in the MENA region in the following sectors: food and agriculture, healthcare, logistics, education and training, and investment. Next, the fourth Australia Unlimited MENA 2016 campaign will run in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait from 24-28 January 2016 to coincide with Australia Day and Arab Health. With the overarching theme of ‘Investing in a Healthy Future’, this program will showcase Australia’s intelligent health solutions; celebrate Australian successes in the region; provide an entry platform for new Australian firms through targeted Investment, Education and Research forums; and other associated activities connecting regional Government, Industry and academia stakeholders.

An extensive PR and media campaign is also planned in the lead up to, during, and after the campaign. We are delighted to see that already a number of notable Australian organisations have signed up to sponsor this campaign, including Platinum Sponsors – Qantas, Government of Victoria, Advanced Hair Studio and Box Hill Institute; and Silver Sponsors – TAHPI and University of Wollongong Dubai.

Sincerely,

Mr. Gerard Seeber
