Austrade update | Connecting Australia to the MENA Region

Dear Members,

Hoping you all had a good summer break.

In the last few months, Austrade participated in La Trobe University, University of Sydney, and University of Wollongong alumni events to support their activities and build relationships with diverse global alumni community in the market. We are interested to hear from alumni and encourage you to stay in touch with your university, get involved with their activities to share knowledge, and build professional relationships.

Australian education providers continue to have a strong presence in UAE with Curtin University recently opening in Dubai to offer undergraduate and post graduate programs to students from the Middle East, the Indian Sub-Continent, Africa and Central Asia.

In August, Austrade, in collaboration with aviation entities dnata and Dubai South, held a webinar on opportunities for Australian providers of ground support equipment (GSE), and training services in the UAE. The webinar saw attendance from 48 companies with expression of interests received from 12 organizations including CSIRO, University of Sydney, BEAK Engineering, and Ground Master. The webinar aimed to help Australian firms gain an in-depth understanding of the aviation industry in Dubai, and the capabilities needed to support the continued expansion of this global aviation hub. Given the positive feedback from Australia, Austrade is looking at a delegation visit to the Dubai Airshow taking place from 12-16 Nov.

On 19 September, Austrade hosted another webinar – UAE: A Food and Agribusiness Hub to provide insight into regional developments, opportunities, trends and regulatory changes in the Food and Agri sector. The target audience included new to market exporters, current exporters in meat, horticulture, grain and dairy, manufacturers and consolidators.

The fifth MENA Connection Seminars is being held 30 October – 10 November 2017 in Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. The seminars are being organized in conjunction with the Australia Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AACCI). Additionally, roundtables, business meetings, and networking receptions will take place to provide an overview on the economic transformation, innovation, services, and sectoral opportunities in the MENA region.

Austrade has also been working alongside Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, and Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), to advocate for an increase shelf life in vacuum packed beef and sheep meat by providing the commercial and scientific justification to satisfy UAE regulatory requirements. The result was a recent breakthrough in shelf life extension to 120 days and 90 days respectively. This regulatory change also helps eliminate over 50% of the food and agri import contraventions which in turn helps in swift food conformity clearances.

3-7 December 2017, Austrade is organizing a Taste Australia event in key cities (Riyadh, Dubai, Kuwait) on behalf of MLA, Dairy Australia, Horticulture Innovation Australia (HIA), and State Government of Victoria. The key objective is to showcase Australian premium food to B2B, food service, flight catering executives and bloggers. The event will provide a broad focus that encompasses market development work and collaboration in positioning Australian premium food products in the region.

Stay connected with our social media channels to hear more about our upcoming events and activities.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr. Gerard Seeber
