A word from the Ambassador | A high point in bilateral relations

After the summer hiatus the Embassy has swung back into business with a busy period of high-level visits and engagements.  Coming during what is already a high point of Australia-UAE bilateral relations, the Governor-General of Australia, HE Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgrove, paid their first State Visit to the UAE from 30 September to 5 October, at the invitation of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nayhan.  The UAE provided an exceptional level of hospitality including meetings with twenty-one leaders, ministers and royal family members across four cities, and two state luncheons.  The visit reaffirmed the deep bonds between the two countries and advanced trade, investment and strategic ties.

The Embassy also hosted the Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, the Hon Keith Pitt MP, on 27 September, whose program included a visit to the north-eastern Emirate of Fujairah the first by an Australian Minister.  We are now preparing for a visit by the Trade, Tourism and Investment Minister, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP, to Abu Dhabi on 23 October.

Our focus on trade, economic and investment issues will continue into November as we prepare for the inaugural meeting of the Australia-UAE Joint Economic Committee (JEC).  Trade Minister Ciobo will host his UAE counterpart the Minister of Economy, HE Sultan Saeed Al Mansouri, in Sydney on 22 November.  The JEC has been established with the aim of advancing practical bilateral initiatives in trade and investment.

Indeed, trade and investment is at the heart of our relations with the UAE and I commend the Australian business community and senior Australian executives based in the UAE on their valuable contribution to further enhancing the bilateral relationship.  I know the Governor-General was impressed by the high calibre of Australians represented here and pleased to meet many of you in person at the function in Dubai.
