A Message from The ABCD Board | The months leading up to Ramadan

Dear members and friends.

I would like to take the opportunity to say Ramadan Kareem to the ABCD community. Ramadan is a great time of year to reflect on what we have achieved and to spend time strengthening our relationships, so I would encourage you to take the opportunity to engage with your clients/suppliers/agents in the spirit of the holy month by suggesting a catch up for coffee around the fasting periods to respect and engage with local customs.

Looking back thus far in 2018, it has been another busy period for the ABCD, with the team working hard to make sure members are being looked after well with a wide variety of events, offers and promotions.

Thank you to all those who participated in our AGM at the Ritz-Carlton DIFC. It was great to see so many in the room to review the past 12 months. We were delighted to report a surplus for 2017, showing that we continue to be a relevant conduit for business generation for the Australian community in Dubai. Other highlights included our new membership category – Entrepreneurs – which has been a run-away success for the ABCD thus far.

Another fantastic piece of news is the confirmation of Australia’s participation in the Dubai Expo2020.  Thanks goes to Justin McGowan from DFAT for presenting at our AGM on the Australian Pavilion and steps ahead.  We were also very lucky to have Mohammed Nauman and Matt Burns for presenting us with information on how to get involved in FIFA’s upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2019 which is being hosted here in the UAE. I look forward to cheering on the Socceroos, the defending champions of course!

On April 24th we were very proud to receive the Dubai Quality Awards’ (DQA) Appreciation Award for Representative Entities. The DQA recognises role-model organisations that strive to achieve excellence through adoption of good practices and soundly-based approaches that are continuously measured and reviewed. The award is given to an organisation that is consistent in their delivery, drives innovation and strives to improve their results. It was my pleasure to receive the award on behalf of all of our members and the team at the ABCD.

We are delighted to announce our new partnership with CPA Australia. We will be working closely with Colleen Schooling, Regional Head of Europe and the UAE as CPA Australia establishes its branch in Dubai, with a view to supporting members and expanding the CPA program in the UAE. We will be collaborating with CPA Australia to bring you information surrounding relevant financial topics impacting you and the region. I look forward to the exciting opportunities that this partnership will bring to both parties.

The Australian and New Zealand communities came out to celebrate the ANZAC Black & Gold Ball and the InterContinental Festival City did a wonderful job in making it a special night. A particular thanks to Janet Bryan and the ANZA team for coordinating the evening with us and making sure it was a night to remember. Thanks also to all the sponsors who contributed prizes in the raffle, resulting in nearly AED20,000 going to the Fred Hollows Foundation. Photos of the night are on our website and Facebook page. Please feel free to share with your friends and family.

We hope to see you at one of our Iftars during Ramadan, and rest assured we will continue to host networking events over the summer.

Thank you for continued support of the ABCD, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Ramadan Kareem.
